MIPS, which stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, is a patented brain protection system designed to reduce rotational motion from angled impacts that can cause strain in the brain.

MIPS mimics the brain’s own protection system inside the skull by adding a low-friction layer between the head and helmet. A helmet with MIPS can absorb more rotational motion from an angled impact.

MIPS was developed by some of the world’s leading researchers in biomechanics and neuroscience at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

Strain level images from lab tests where two identical helmets, one with MIPS and one without, tested at the same speed show a clear difference. The red that appears in the image below indicates more strain in the brain. A helmet with MIPS reduces the rotational motion transmitted to the brain.

When you fall off your bike, rarely will you hit your head directly on top of your helmet. Generally, when your head impacts the ground it does so at an angle. When this happens, rotational motion occurs to the brain which could cause injury. Luckily, there is a membrane inside your skull that the brain slides along to reduce the rotational motion transmitted to the brain. MIPS uses a low-friction layer between the head and helmet similar to the membrane inside your skull, which in experimental and numerical tests has shown a reduction of rotational motion to the brain.

Since 1996, research and tests have been performed to compare a helmet with MIPS to a conventional helmet. The results have shown it is possible to reduce the rotational motion transmitted to the brain by adding the MIPS.
