Lesley Paterson Finishes Second at Xterra Oak Mountain!

The battle for the podium at the Xterra Oak Mountain Championship in Pelham, Alabama was not just between the competition – it also a fight against brutal heat and humidity and an extremely challenging course. Lesley Paterson met the challenge and crossed the finish line in second place behind Pan America Tour Champion Suzie Snyder.

Xterra Oak Mountain consisted of a 1.5km swim, 30km of technical, twisting singletrack mountain biking, and a 10km trail run punctuated by steep climbs and descents. The warmth of the water translated into stifling humidity through the bike and run courses. However, Paterson’s responsive Liv Obsess Advanced proved to be the right choice for the challenging conditions, allowing her to take over the second place position which she maintained though the difficult run.

After an off-season fraught with injury and complications due to Lyme’s disease, Oak Mountain was Paterson’s first Xterra triathlon of the year. Pleased to make it to the start line and compete, Paterson is looking forward to continuing to improve throughout the season.

“My goal this weekend was purely about getting back in to the environment of racing, enjoying being around my Xterra tribe, and finding gratefulness for being able to do what I love,” said Paterson.

Before the race, Paterson scribed the word “attitude” down her right arm and “gratitude” down her left arm, reminders to keep everything in perspective and just go for it without making excuses.

In addition to racing professionally and coaching athletes with her business Braveheart Coaching, Paterson and husband Dr. Simon Marshall have also just released their book, The Brave Athlete. You can catch Paterson touring around the United States this summer promoting her book as well as at the next race on her calendar, Xterra Victoria on July 9
