Marianne Vos scores the win for the second day in a row at Giro Rosa, propelling her forward into the third in the general classification, securing the points jersey for another day, and moving her into the lead of the mountains classification.

Marianne Vos made a last-minute pass in the third stage of Giro Rosa to secure the top step of the podium for a second day in a row. With the win, Vos moves into third in the general classification with seven days left in the tour.

Sunday’s stage took riders 104.1km from Sagliano Micca to Piedicavallo over mostly flat terrain until the road pointed up toward the finish. The final kilometers of the stage would prove to be the most decisive of the day. In preparation, CCC-Liv front-runners Vos and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio set out on a reconnaissance mission prior to the start to inspect the last 25km of the stage.

“It was a similar tough finish as Saturday, with a sloping final and cobblestones on the very last stretch,” said CCC-Liv sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “We knew she [Marianne] could handle this.”

The team worked together to keep Vos and Moolman Pasio as fresh as possible for the push to the line. With the peloton chasing a breakaway leader up the final climb, Vos suffered a flat tire just 10km to the finish. But, a quick bike change and teamwork helped her move back to the front without expending much energy. Once inside the final kilometer where the pitch increased to 14 percent, Vos launched her sprint aboard the Langma Advanced SL and passed the lead rider just as she raised her hand to celebrate the victory.

“When I launched the sprint, I actually thought it was going to be too late,” said Vos. “It was still such a big gap to Lucy. But then we entered those final steep 100 meters on the cobbles, and when Lucy put her arm in the air, I just had more speed and came around. It was crazy, and heartbreaking for Lucy.”

CCC-Liv embarks on the fourth day of Giro Rosa Monday, which will play well for the sprinters.
