Givers: Shannon Galpin
Shannon Galpin's championship qualities are her bravery, determination and fierce refusal to accept inequality. Her strong spirit compelled her to start Mountain2Mountain, a nonprofit to help women and girls in conflict zones; it led her to become the first woman to mountain bike in Afghanistan; and propelled her toward her mission to break down gender barriers. Since 2012, Shannon has been devoted to supporting the Afghan National Women’s Cycling Team, a group of women who are literally pedaling a revolution.
With the help of Liv, Shannon has been able to deliver nearly 60 new bikes, helmets and jerseys to the women of the Afghan National Cycling team. Her efforts and the equipment provided by Liv have allowed the team to become stronger riders and empowered more girls to challenge cultural stigmas and ride a bike.
Since Shannon began supporting the Afghan Women’s Team, news of the bravery of these women has spread. The girls are now stars of a feature-length documentary due to release this year, "Afghan Cycles", a book written by Shannon, "Mountain2Mountain", they have been named one of National Geographic’s Adventurers of the Year, and have been nominated for the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize, representing the bike as a vehicle for social change. On top of all of that, the Afghan National Women’s Cycling Team dreams of competing against the best riders in the world. With diligent training, the girls hope to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games.
