Liv Racing's Sandra Walter took part in the C2 and C1 Carmel Mountain XCO races Thursday and Friday in the village of Kerem Maharal near the city of Haifa, Israel. The area is known for it’s active cycling community and single-track trails, which would be utilized for the 6.75km racecourse. For both days, the main opponents were the brutal heat and dry, loose, rocky terrain.
A strong international field was present for this UCI event, with American Erin Huck taking the win both days. On Thursday’s C2 race, Walter pushed her Pique Advanced Pro 29 to 3rd place, finishing six laps in 1:20.24. After burning some of her matches in the heat, Friday’s C1 race proved to be more of a challenge. On the same course, Walter crossed the finish line with a time of 1:21.42, good enough for 6th place.
“Today was tough,” said Walter. “I felt the heat way more than yesterday and wasn’t able to push as hard. Yesterday I felt strong and was able to make moves, put down power and carry my speed. The Pique 29 was perfect for rolling efficiency over the many rough pedaling sections.”
Walter looks forward to one more race before heading back home; she will be competing in Epic Israel, a 4-day stage race September 25-28 with her Canadian teammate, Cindy Montambault.
