Vos won four of the 10 stages in this year’s Giro Rosa, the premier stage race on the UCI Women’s WorldTour calendar. The three-time world champion now has 25 career stage wins at the Italian stage race.
The final stage was 120km with a few tough climbs in the closing kilometers including the final 500 meters on a cobblestone road in Udine. A breakaway of 14 riders escaped 20km into the race, but CCC-Liv Team was able to control that move and others to set Vos up for the finish.
“With turns, cobblestones and a winding road, this was an ideal finish for Marianne Vos,” said CCC-Liv Team sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “During the stage, Marianne already announced that she had good legs. The entire team sacrificed themselves to guide Marianne to the final as well as possible.”
The team led the chase to bring back French champion Aude Biannic, who attacked late and had a gap of 25 seconds with 5km to go. Once Biannic was caught with 1km to go, Vos made her move, launching an attack up the final climb on her Langma Advanced SL team bike. Vos was also riding with a recently introduced WheelSystem from the new components brand CADEX.
In addition to Vos’s stage win, her teammate Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio had a strong showing in Italy, finishing fourth overall in the general classification.
“Marianne was in great shape and had an amazing performance with four stage victories,” Blijlevens said. “We are also pleased with the way Ashleigh secured fourth place. She started well and then showed her resilience in the stage to Montasio.”
