There are eight stages and seven days of racing, in the 2024 Tour de France Femmes and while that is considerably shorter than the 21-stage men’s race, it means that each stage is a must-win and a must-watch—there are no lulls. This year, there are three flat stages, two hilly stages, two mountain stages, and one time trial, for a total of 946.3 kilometers.

There will be 22 teams with seven riders each, or 154 total riders. Liv is proud to sponsor one of those teams, Liv AlUla Jayco.

While a lot of attention is given to the individual riders, their achievements are shared by their teams—and made possible by their teams. For example, a team’s strongest rider in a particular stage will be pulled into position by their teammates, called domestiques. By drafting behind their teammates, who take turns riding as fast as they can at the front, the leader conserves energy. Ultimately, when the time is right, the leader makes their move to the front in an effort to win the stage.

In the inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, average speeds ranged from about 43 km/h (28 mph) for flat stages to about 34 km/h (21 mph) for mountain stages, like the famous La Super Planche des Belles Filles.

Yellow jersey (maillot jaune)

Awarded to the rider currently leading the General Classification, or lowest overall time. Typically the stage winner also takes the yellow jersey, but not always. 

Green jersey (maillot vert)

Awarded to the rider currently leading the Points Classification. Points are given at stage finishes and intermediate sprints, which is why this is considered the sprinter’s jersey.

Polka dot jersey (maillot à pois rouge)

Awarded to the rider currently leading the Mountains Classification, or Queen of the Mountains. Points are given at the top of each hill and mountain or at the summit finishes at altitude, and number of points vary depending on the category of difficulty.

White jersey (maillot blanc) sponsored by Liv

Awarded to the rider currently leading the General Classification, or lowest overall time, among those under 23 years of age, also known as Best Young Rider. 

Most Aggressive Rider

Awarded by panel decision at the end of each day to the most combative or risk-taking rider, who then wears a special red number, but not a special jersey. 

Team Classification

Based on the collective time of the three highest-placed riders in the General Classification from each team, who then wear special yellow numbers, but not special jerseys.

A total of €250,000 will be awarded across the different stage, jersey and team competitions, including €50,000 to the winner of the final general classification. Women’s cycling has made great progress toward equality, but we have a ways to go. You can help!
