Lisa Tertsch raced a triathlon for the first time as a Liv Racing athlete on Friday, competing in the ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup in Olsztyn, Poland. At this point in the year, Tertsch would normally be deep into her racing calendar which consists of Sprint and Olympic Distance races. Though the season is starting late due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Tertsch has been hard at work training for her return to racing.
“I’ve been doing some brick and transition training to prepare specifically for triathlons again,” said Tertsch. “During the pandemic, I only trained the three disciplines individually, but in preparation for the race, I wanted to connect them within a training session to be ready to race a whole triathlon.”
Excitement mixed with nerves as Tertsch headed to the start line, but her preparation paid off. With the majority of the top women in the field finishing together after the 750m swim and 20km bike, Tertsch pushed hard on the 5km run to earn a time of 16:42. After all three disciplines, she crossed the finish line in 1:00:01, just three seconds behind the first-place finisher, to take silver.
“Crossing the finish line, I was really happy that all the little parts came together and that my body and mind still remember how to race after this difficult time,” said Tertsch. “I was also just grateful to be there, to be allowed to be at a race again.”
Next up, Tertsch will race the ITU World Triathlon Series in Hamburg, Germany on September 5. Since Hamburg is the only remaining WTS race on the schedule for 2020, World Championship titles will also be awarded. You can watch the action live, starting at 16:00 CET, 5 September on TriathlonLive.TV.
