In a reduced sprint finish, Marianne Vos powered to a second place finish for the Netherlands behind her compatriot and teammate Lorena Wiebes, who took gold at this year’s European Games.
An international multi-sport event in the Olympic tradition, the 2019 European Games began Friday, June 21 and will continue through Sunday, June 30 in Minsk, Belarus. This year’s competition is only the second edition of the event, the inaugural games were just four years ago in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The women’s road race took place Saturday, hosting 72 riders from 26 nations on a 120km/ eight lap course through the city. After an early breakaway, the bunch was back together for the last lap. Vos’ teammate for the games, Anna van der Breggen (Netherlands) attacked on the final lap, reducing the field to around 30 women before heading into a sprint finish. Well represented in the lead group, the Netherlands positioned Wiebes’ for victory with Vos escorting her all the way to the line aboard her Langma Advanced SL.
Vos will compete again this coming weekend in the Dutch National Championships June 26-29.
