Situated on the beautiful island of Mallorca off the Mediterranean coast of Spain, the sixth edition of Challenge Mallorca took place Saturday in Peguera between the coast of Calvia and the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana. The race welcomed a deep international field of female pro triathletes, including Liv Racing’s Radka Kahlefeldt, who looked to end her European season on a high note.
Kahlefeldt began the race Saturday with an early lead, exiting the 1.9km swim onto Tora beach in 26:31 with a group of four trailing close behind. First onto the 90km bike leg on her Avow Advanced Pro, Kahlefeldt had a good battle going with Fenella Langridge of Great Britain during the first portion of the ride. Unfortunately, Langridge had a fall and was unable to finish the race due to injuries she sustained in the accident. Kahlefeldt extended her lead on the bike by over four minutes by the time she entered T2 and stretched her gap to nearly six minutes on the run. The win marks her third Challenge victory in a row.
“So good to win here in beautiful Mallorca,” said Radka. “My European season is now finished and time to pack the bags and travel back to Australia.”
Kahlefeldt’s win has placed her at the top of the Challenge Family World Bonus ranking for 2019 with no other contenders currently registered for the remaining middle-distance Challenge races. The new bonus structure aims to reward the series’ best racers $150,000 USD with equal prize money given to the top five male and female pros at the end of the year.
