Fitness Apps

I love to mix up my workout routine so that I don’t get bored. I hate when working out starts to feel like more of a job or a task to check off your to-do list rather than something you just enjoy doing every day to better yourself. Programs and applications help keep you focused, entertained, motivated and having fun with your workouts. The apps shown below are ones that I use personally to help me stay active and motivated every singleday.

30 Challenge Page

The App: 30 Day FitnessThe app is filled monthly challenges, categorized by which part of the body you want to target: Arms, Core, Legs, or Strength. Whether you want to challenge your abs, butt or biceps there is a daily guide to get you there.

Why I Love It: Everyone likes a challenge. This app keeps you motivated by tracking you workouts. It gives you ideas for new workouts and gives you tutorials on how to do them the right way. My favorite challenge? 30-day Butt Challenge!

active page

The App: Active—The ACTIVE app is a quick and easy way for you to find and register for activities and events happening where you live right from your tablet or smart phone. Categories include: Triathlon, 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Fitness, Cycling, Basketball, Football, Golf, Marathons, Mountain Biking, Nutrition, Outdoors, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball, Walking.

Why I Love It: Having the events broken out into specific categories, so you can compare what is available in your area is really helpful. Being able to share the event with family and friends via social media makes it easier to participate with people you care about (and keeps you committed, since everyone knows about it). And, if you are not ready to commit, you can save the event and come back to it when you are ready to register. How cool?

flywheel page

The App: Flywheel Sports—The indoor cycling brand (28 studios across the US and abroad) has made it easier to sign up for your favorite fitness classes with this app. You’re able to reserve classes, purchase credits, memberships and gift cards, track performance and class rank and provide feedback on classes and instructors without all the hassle of finding and logging onto the website. I love using this app to find cycling classes, and it will definitely come in handy for Tri training, especially when the weather isn’t ideal for training outside.

Mtn Athletics Page

The App: Mountain Athletics—Created by The North Face, the app is a user-friendly version of the free in-person training sessions hosted by the North Face in 5 major US cities (Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC) every Tuesday and Thursday. The app provides you with activity-based, goal-specific strength and conditioning programs.

Why I Love It: The idea of the exercise programs the app offers is to get you ready for an activity you already do, like backcountry skiing or rock climbing, which makes it a little different from other fitness apps. I love the step-by-step instructional videos, which give you tips on form, technique and pace and make it super easy to do at home, especially for beginners. Other features I like include: timers, calendars and summary reports to keep you on track and meet your goals.

Nike Training Page

The App: Nike Training Club—Designed by Nike, the idea is the app can replace your personal trainer. The over 100 different workouts are designed by “Nike Master Trainers.” Create 4-week workout plans and track your progress.

Why I Love It: I really like the NTC app because it allows you to pick the most effective workout based on your goals, endurance level and free time and cultivate your own fitness program. If you’re unsure of a move, there’s a quick video showing you how to master it. You can mix up your normal gym routine and complete the workouts in the comfort of your own home. Cool bonuses like the “Workout of the Week,” offer variety and keep with current workout trends. And best of all, it is ENCOURAGING.
