Liv Racing off-road triathlete Lesley Paterson landed on her second podium of the year Saturday at Xterra Oak Mountain in Alabama, USA. Returning home from Spain after a tough ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships at the end of April where she finished fifth, Paterson had to fight her way past the competition this weekend to finish second on the technical Oak Mountain terrain.
Conditions in Alabama were unseasonably hot, humid and dry as the athletes lined up for the one-mile swim in Double Oak Lake. Paterson emerged from the water in a pack of two other athletes, about one minute back of two leaders and 20 seconds behind the third-place swimmer. From there, she played it smart on the 21-mile mountain bike course aboard her Obsess Advanced.
“The trails are very twisty and turney, so it makes for a challenging ride,” said Paterson. “The Liv Obsess corners beautifully, but with the dry conditions it was still hard to negotiate them all!”
Before heading into T2, Paterson had moved into third place with her best discipline ahead of her. She posted the best run time of the day, allowing her to catch and pass one final competitor to finish second.
“I would rather have won, but I’m glad I fought all the way through the race and didn't give up,” said Paterson. “Our mantra is always to give 100 percent effort and attitude no matter how you feel on the day! If you do that, then it’s a success.”
Paterson will head home to San Diego for some rest and recovery before tackling the second half of her off-road triathlon season.
