Team BikeExchange-Jayco’s Ane Santesteban used her local knowledge as a Basque rider to go for an attack in the finale at Gran Premio Ciudad de Eibar, leading to a second-place finish.

Sunday’s 112km Spanish one-day classic was animated by multiple attacks early on, though none stuck until race’s midway point. A solo rider extended a lead of over two and a half minutes before Team BikeExchange-Jayco drove up the speed in the peloton to reduce the gap. The breakaway was caught at the base of a 5.4km climb with 17km to go. Ane Santesteban followed an attacking rider on the climb with two other riders following suit. Near the top of the climb, Santesteban pushed the pace to drop one competitor. Santesteban and the two remaining leaders traded attacks on the descent, but no one rider could extend a lead. Just before the finish, three other riders bridged to the lead group and the six faced off in a sprint to the line where Santesteban secured second aboard her Langma Advanced SL Disc.

“I am happy but this really motivates me for the next races to go really hard for the win,” said Santesteban. “It was really nice to race on home roads and also having all my friends and family along the route really helped me. And of course, knowing all the corners and the downhill is always an advantage for me and even in the finish line I knew exactly all the corners.”
