Sunday’s grand finale brought racers to Wales for a challenging 122km battle for the green winner’s jersey. With a 14-second GC lead, Rivera needed to ride smart and keep the leaders in sight at all times. Right off the start, attacks started flying. On the first Queen of the Mountain climb, the peloton split with Team Sunweb occupying five of the leading 15 positions. However, the bunch came back together before the next QOM challenge. In the final 20km, five riders made the jump for a breakaway with Rivera and Lucinda Brand representing the team at the front of the race. When that group was caught, it became obvious that the race would come down to a bunch sprint, where Rivera was able to finish safely at the front of the peloton to secure the overall victory aboard her Liv Langma Advanced SL and wearing her Liv Extima helmet.
Rivera’s GC win at the OVO Energy Women’s Tour was her first Women’s WorldTour stage race overall victory.
“This is something special and new for me,” said Rivera “I’m really proud of the work that I’ve put in and the work that the team and staff have put in this week. We played to our strengths with the intermediate sprints, we knew that this race comes down to seconds so we put our energy in that at the beginning of the race and this proved to be the difference at the end. I’m really proud to have taken the win, the jersey belongs to the whole team.”
