After a series of strong results, including silver at World Triathlon Cup Pontevedra, Tertsch was excited to tackle the fast, flat course in Valencia. Out of the water after the 750m swim, Tertsch was secure in the top-20, less than 20 seconds off the leader. Onto the 20km bike, a large group formed at the front. Tertsch settled in and took on fluids to curb the effects of the heat and prepare herself for the 5km run. She was immediately to the front out of transition and kept the pace high. Only two other competitors were able to hang with Tertsch into the last 200m. Tertsch pushed hard to the finish to take the win by two seconds with a time of 55:17.
“About 400m from the finish, I knew I had something left in me,” said Tertsch. “I started my sprint and felt that no one could follow. I’m happy to take the win, I cannot ask for anything more.”
In just one week, Tertsch will take to the start line again at World Triathlon Cup Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.
