The women kicked off the men’s Tour de France Saturday with the one-day La Course, by Le Tour de France. The race around Nice culminated with a six-woman sprint finish led by Marianne Vos and Lizzie Deignan. In the end, Vos crossed the finish line centimeters back of Deignan to take second place.

CCC-Liv’s Marianne Vos started La Course as one of the many favorites. The 96km, two-lap race around Nice required a combination of climbing and descending prowess with a 5.8km 5.1%-grade climb of Côte de Rimiez and technical descent before a 23km flat drag to the finish. The race opened up on the second trip up Côte de Rimiez with a swift acceleration at the front that fractured the peloton. Vos was positioned near the front and quickly reacted to stick with the five leaders. The group pulled 1:15 minutes ahead of the rest of the peloton before the descent and extended their lead by another 30 seconds before the finish.

Vos kept the leaders at a high pace and had the energy to continuously chase down attacks from her rivals. Finally, she launched her own attack and sprinted her Langma Advanced SL with CADEX wheels ahead of the group. Vos was caught just before the line and lost the win by mere centimeters.

“It looked pretty good for us in the leading group of six,” said CCC-Liv sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “The cooperation was fine, Marianne Vos certainly did her share of the work. We knew she would be the strongest sprinter on paper. Marianne started the final sprint from quite a distance. It was promising for a long time. But Deignan, who had still another teammate and cleverly used that advantage in the final, unfortunately beat her.”

CCC-Liv will travel to the Netherlands next for the Boels Ladies Tour, which will run September 1-6.
