After giving birth to daughter Ruby in January, Radka Kahelfeldt celebrated her first Mother’s Day as a new mom by finishing first with a commanding lead at Ironman 70.3 Vietnam on Sunday. Kahlefeldt posted the fastest time in the swim, bike and run in Danang, making her record two-for-two in 2018.
Out of the picturesque ocean swim in front of the Hyatt Regency Danang Resort, Kahlefeldt exited the 1.2-mile swim course in 25 minutes, 52 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Once out of T1 on her Avow Advanced Pro, she quickly increased her lead to over five minutes and gained even more time by putting her Attacca TT aero helmet to use over the fast, flat course. After 56 miles, Kahlefeldt had stretched her lead to eight minutes.
With a significant lead, Kahlefeldt could have taken it easy during the brutally hot 13.1-mile run. Instead, she flew to a women’s-fastest 1:29:45 run which put her nearly 11 minutes ahead of the next woman on the podium. It also meant she finished in 6th overall, just 6 seconds off of the male pro 5th-place finisher.
“It was a great day to celebrate my first Mother’s Day with Brad [Kahlefeldt] and Ruby waiting for me at the finish line. I couldn’t have asked for a better race,” said Kahlefeldt.
