The six-stage Boels Ladies Tour concluded on Sunday with a final 19.6km time trial around Roosendaal in the Dutch city of Noord-Brabant. With tired legs from the five previous stages, Team Sunweb’s Ellen van Dijk put the power down on her TT bike to finish second for the day, with a time that placed her second in the general classification as well.
After a strong Stage 5 that saw her finish second, Lucinda Brand sat just 18 seconds off the pace of the GC overall leader, Annemiek van Vleuten. In fact, Brand had taken bonus seconds on every road stage of the tour, which gave her the potential to finish on the GC podium or even challenge for a surprise victory. It wasn’t meant to be – Brand unfortunately took a nasty fall early on in the time trial after coming into a corner with too much speed. Escaping without injury, Brand was able to continue on but lost valuable time changing to her Langma Advanced SL due to mechanical issues with her TT bike. Van Dijk’s strong performance throughout the stages meant she was also close enough to grab a GC podium with her second-place finish.
“I’m pretty satisfied with the time trial today,” said Van Dijk. “Of course I wanted the win and went as hard as I could, but that was enough for 2nd on the stage and in the GC. It’s a good performance and the team worked really well this week. We did all we could and we can be happy with that. We’re all in good shape heading towards the Worlds and we can look forward to that.”
The team will look forward to defending their TTT World Championship title on September 23rd in Innsbruck, Austria.
