After finishing second in Xterra Tahiti the week before, Lesley Paterson returned to the US and immediately jumped right into her second race of the season – Xterra Oak Mountain in Shelby County, Alabama. Paterson crossed the finish line first on Saturday’s Xterra triathlon with a lead of over three minutes. But she didn’t stop there; Paterson scored another win for the weekend when she hit the trails on Sunday for the Xterra Oak Mountain 20K trail running race.
The Oak Mountain Xterra Triathlon challenged elite racers to a 1.5km swim, 30km mountain bike and 10km trail run through Oak Mountain State Park in hot and humid conditions. Out of the water Paterson was fifth, but it didn’t take long for her to rocket to the front aboard her Liv Obsess Advanced. The long, single-loop trail consisted of a 700-foot climb and fast flowing descent, highlighted by the technical “blood rock” section of trail. Onto the run, Paterson further increased her lead by finishing the fastest women’s run split.
“It’s so beautiful, the terrain is amazing, the people are amazing. It’s just an incredible place,” Paterson said of the Oak Mountain venue to Xterra. Last year, Paterson finished second behind Suzie Snyder and was proud to take the win this year.
