Coryn Rivera Wins Tour of Flanders!

Equipos / Atletas

In an edge-of-your-seat battle to the finish line, Team Sunweb’s Coryn Rivera’s scored her second UCI Women’s WorldTour victory on Sunday at the prestigious Tour of Flanders. Broadcasted through a live stream on Facebook, viewers had the opportunity to witness the excitement of Rivera’s strong and successful sprint to first place on her Envie Advanced Pro team bike.

Otherwise known as the Ronde van Vlaanderen, the historic race covers 153 km and 12 climbs, including the infamous Muur of Geraardsbergen which is steep (maximum grade of 19.8%), narrow and cobbled. The difficulty of the race thinned the field, but no major breakaways were had until Team Sunweb rider Rozanne Slik made a jump to the front. Slik held the lead for 20 km and stretched out a minute and a half advantage before she was caught.

Another breakaway of lead riders split the chasing group, but the final push from Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans), Kasia Niewiadoma (WM3), Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle High5), and Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-Scott) put the chasers on alert. Team Sunweb kept a cool head with Ellen Van Dijk putting in the brunt of the work to pull the four leaders back into view with only one kilometer remaining. Having done her work, Van Dijk pulled back and let Rivera loose. Pedaling out a perfectly timed sprint, Rivera finished just ahead of the pack in disbelief.

“It’s so great to see the full commitment of our team work out. We all give 100% for each other and that makes the difference in the end,” said Van Dijk after the team’s win.

“The sprint was absolutely thrilling,” said Rivera. “I still feel like I’m dreaming.”

Rivera now leads the Women’s WorldTour overall standings. The next stop on Team Sunweb’s calendar is the Healthy Aging Tour starting April 5 in the Netherlands. However, the Women’s WorldTour takes a weekend off before the Amstel Gold Race on April 16 also in the Netherlands.
