Rivera Takes the Podium at Gent-Wevelgem!
Coryn Rivera’s second UCI Women’s WorldTour podium comes just a week after her exciting win in Italy. Sunday’s Gent-Wevelgem also came down to a reduced bunch sprint, which was a first for this race. Rivera played to her strengths and fought a tough battle to the line, finishing third on her Envie Advanced Pro team bike.
The Belgian one-day classic covers 146 km and some of the same roads and climbs as the men’s race. With three punishing climbs, it was surprising that 40 riders remained bunched down the flat roads back to Wevelgem. Over the last 30 km, small groups and solo riders began to launch attacks, including former winner and Team Sunweb rider Floortje Mackaij. Every breakaway attempt was reeled back into the group and the bunch prepared for the final sprint.
“Floortje, Ellen, Lucinda and I were in a perfect position going into the final 5km and even better in the last kilometer. A win is always sweeter but I still couldn’t have accomplished the podium without the help of the girls,” said Rivera.
The result not only gives Rivera another notch in her WorldTour belt, it also moved her up three places in the overall standings to third and only 15 points off the lead. Lucinda Brand remains close behind in fifth.
