Lesley Paterson Wins XTERRA Pan Am Championship!
After a triumphant win at Xterra Beaver Creek in Colorado, Lesley Paterson blew the competition out of the water again on Saturday, winning the Xterra Pan Am Championship race at Snowbasin Resort in Utah by seven minutes.
Paterson emerged from the one-mile open water swim in sixth place, but once aboard her Liv Obsess Advanced, quickly began fighting her way to the top, passing all her competition within the five miles of the 18-mile (29 km) mountain bike leg. The mountain bike course would take the athletes up more than 3,000 feet (914.4 meters) to the top of Sardine Peak, which towers 7,300 feet (2,225 meters) above sea level. Despite the altitude and challenging terrain, Paterson continued to attack and managed to have a little fun on the descent into transition. With a substantial lead over her competitors, Paterson did let up on the pace, finishing with a time of 2:51:13 after the 7-mle (11.3 km) run.
"After coming out the water a disappointing 2 minutes back, I really went for it on the bike,” said Paterson. “The course was super hilly with spectacular views, so my LIV Obsess was just perfect. As a consequence, I made up most of the time in the first 6 miles. After I got in to the lead on the bike, I kept pushing hard and came in to transition with almost 3 mins of a lead. Even although the race was up at 7000 feet in altitude, I still managed to feel strong on the run and put another 4 mins into the girls behind. All in all, it was a great day out and I’m excited about my fitness for the World Championships in October!"
But, of course, Paterson did not stop there. On Sunday, when most of her competitors were recovering from the tough triathlon the day before, Paterson entered into the Xterra Trail Run National Championship, held on some of the same trails she raced the day prior. The 21 km (13 mile) trail run included sections of rock gardens and consisted of 2,200 feet (670.6 meters) of elevation. Paterson clocked the fastest time for the women and smoked the course at a 7:10 minute/mile pace.
Paterson will be traveling to Maui, Hawaii to compete in Xterra World Championships on October 29.
