The Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour wrapped up on Sunday with an Individual Time Trial Stage that saw Team Sunweb’s Ellen van Dijk go fastest on the short course. The win brought the tally to three wins for the team during the 7-day stage race and six top-three finishes, good enough to claim the overall in the team classification.
After another second place finish on Friday’s stage 5 and a fifth place on stage 6, van Dijk had moved into the runner-up position for the overall general classification win. Coryn Rivera had fallen back to fourth place. Heading into the final stage, van Dijk sat just seven seconds off of the leader’s jersey.
Racers set off on the time trial from the start/finish in Schmölln, climbing just 200m over the 18.7km course. The flat course suited the Team Sunweb women, with five team members finishing in the top 10 and van Dijk taking the win by two seconds. In the end, van Dijk’s strong performance could not change the outcome of the GC and she finished second overall, with Lucinda Brand and Rivera rounding out the top four slots.
“Not to win the GC is, of course, a shame, but I am glad that I could win the TT,” said van Dijk. “As a team, we showed that we are at a super high level and we are ready for the second part of the season.”
