5 Benefits of Having an E-Bike

By Crystal Anthony

Recently, I raced the Leadville 100 MTB and Gravel Worlds in Nebraska – both are over seven-hour races and have over 10,000 feet of climbing. I love pedaling, I love climbing. The feeling of pushing myself to do something I wasn’t sure I could do is amazing. But, I also love my e-bike! It’s possible to embrace both suffering and playing. Sure, I take careful time to dial in the lightest, fastest XC bike, but when I first tried the Intrigue X Advanced E+ Elite last summer, I was immediately hooked by its capabilities and the options it opens up.

In my opinion, it’s not either an acoustic bike or an e-bike - anyone from new riders to professional riders can benefit from both. Here are 5 benefits of an e-bike for everyone:

  1. Differing fitness levels or different training plans can ride together
  2. Ride a trail in less time with less fatigue
  3. Pre-ride a race course while also resting for race day
  4. Open up more options for recovery rides
  5. Run errands without a car
Friends riding together

Differing fitness levels or different training plans can ride together

Newer riders are able to join their more experienced friends without worrying about the pace. Because an e-bike has multiple power settings, they can challenge themselves to different degrees by using different levels of assist. Families or groups of friends can ride together without the stress of managing different paces. More experienced riders can use an e-bike to ride with a friend if they have an easier day on their training plan and their friend has a harder workout planned.

Ride a trail in less time with less fatigue

Newer riders can practice skills without aerobic fatigue being as much of a limiter. Staying fresher mentally and physically will help with confidence when tackling new features or skills. More experienced riders can also benefit from using an e-bike, the Intrigue X Advanced E+ Elite will get you places instead of having to arrange a shuttle to session downhill trails. They can also work on challenging features with less fatigue from the pedaling aspect of sessioning.

Pre-ride a race course while also resting for race day

Both newer riders and experienced riders benefit from seeing a course ahead of time as they will know what to expect and can save mental energy during the race. This allows riders to study a course without interrupting a taper.

Open up options for recovery rides (you don’t have to avoid hills or features)

Often the woods are mentally the most rejuvenating place to ride. Nature, lack of cars, and shade are refreshing aspects of off-road riding. However, typically riding in the woods involves a lot of hard effort due to the undulating nature of trails and off-road riding. Both newer riders and experienced riders can take their recovery rides off-road to embrace the mental benefits without worrying about high torque or anaerobic efforts interrupting physical recovery.

Run errands without a car

Hopping on the e-bike to run an errand downtown, drop something at a friend's house, or go to coffee is a great way to go green without adding a lot of fatigue to your day.
