Team Sunweb went into Saturday’s one-day GP de Plouay Women’s WorldTour race with a solid plan and came away with yet another podium for their efforts. From a reduced bunch of 15 riders, Coryn Rivera fought for position in the sprint to the line, finishing third.
The race – which takes place in the heart of Brittany, France – is a favorite on the WWT calendar. Totaling 125.5km with four 27.7km laps and one final shorter loop into the finish, the course is punctuated by punchy climbs that offer many opportunities to shatter the peloton. Though no breakaway attempts could get away during the first two-thirds of the race, attack after attack in the final 40km began to make things interesting. Team Sunweb, still going strong with five riders in the front pack, was sharp on every attack to close gaps and to further thin out the field. When it came down to the final kilometers, just Liane Lippert and Rivera remained in contention.
“The final time up the climb Liane followed a huge attack and we were both in the front group,” said Rivera. “She dug super deep to keep our group moving and so that the 2nd group wouldn’t catch. In the sprint I had to hesitate just a bit to change sides and I think it cost me the win. But I am super proud of the girls for the effort we put into the race. And while a win is always better, we can be happy with this podium and we will be back next year to move up on that podium.”
