Liv Racing Collective athlete Radka Kahlefeldt finished second at Ironman Asia Pacific Championships in Cairns, Australia on Sunday. The result, impressive on its own, was underscored for two reasons – it was Kahlefeldt’s first major race since February 2020 and it was her first-ever full Ironman.

Normally an Ironman 70.3-distance specialist, Radka Kahlefeldt has had a goal to race a full-distance Ironman. Her plans to race an Ironman were disrupted by Covid in March 2020. Kahlefeldt took a break from racing through her pregnancy with her second child, who she gave birth to in March 2021. After dealing with injury, Kahlefeldt made her return to professional racing over the weekend at Ironman Cairns.

The race began with a 3.8km swim in Palm Cove, where Kahlefeldt exited the water just seconds behind the race leader. She held her position over the 180km bike course, which skirted the coastline of the Pacific Ocean on the Captain Cook Highway, entering into the second transition five minutes behind the leader. Kahlefeldt maintained her pace 42.2km run, crossing the finish line less than six minutes back in second place. The finish earned her a ticket to the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, which she gladly accepted.

“I loved my first Ironman experience and am excited to have another big goal coming up with World Championships in Kona,” said Kahlefeldt.
