CCC-Liv Team rider Marianne Vos sprinted to a podium finish at the Postnord Vågårda WestSweden Road Race Sunday, just missing the win by a few centimeters. The second-place finish put Vos in second place overall in the 2019 UCI Women’s WorldTour rankings.

It was the latest in a string of strong results for Marianne Vos, who in July won four stages at the Giro Rosa, followed by her second win at La Course by Le Tour de France.

Sunday’s Postnord Vågårda WestSweden Road Race followed a team time trial on Saturday that saw the CCC-Liv Team finish eighth. The 145km road race consisted of one long loop followed by three shorter circuits featuring the Hägrungabakken hill and a gravel section that ended just 3km from the finish. There was a total of 28.6km of gravel sections.

A breakaway of 14 riders formed on a gravel climb about 35km into the day. CCC-Liv riders helped keep the break under control, and the group was caught with 62km to go. There were a number of attacks in the final 50km, but in the end it came down to a sprint of the strongest riders still at the front.

Vos was in good position over the final climbs and she powered into the final turn at the front of the field on her Liv Langma Advanced SL team bike. The Dutch star launched her sprint with about 300 meters to go but was just barely edged out at the line by Italian Marta Bastianelli of Team Virtu.

“It was actually quite a good leadout from Ale Cipollini and Virtu,” Vos said. “I think Marta was on my wheel and it was just a little too long and I didn’t have the legs.”
