Thalita de Jong Takes European CX Title!
On Sunday, the current cyclocross world champion Thalita de Jong again crossed the finish line in first, this time in Pont-Château, in the Loire-Atlantique region of France.
De Jong broke away from the group halfway through the race on her Liv Brava to finish solo by a good margin ahead of compatriot and Rabo Liv teammate Lucinda Brand (the Netherlands).
The difficult course, known for its two long climbs punctuated with barriers leading up to the finish line, was a struggle for the majority of the racers. After a crash right out of the start that left only 18 riders still on their bikes, the technical nature of the course benefitted the stronger riders and the lead pack was soon reduced to just seven riders, including de Jong and Brand.
De Jong made short work of the steep climbs that defeated chasing rider Sanne Cant (Belgium), allowing her to easily pedal to the top step of the podium. Brand was left to do a little more work, battling hard against Caroline Mani (France) and Jolien Verschueren (Belgium), besting both during the final lap.
De Jong now has her sights set on two more jerseys: the Dutch National Championship jersey and another World Championship title.
