After returning from the first two World Cup XCO races in Europe, Liv Racing athlete Sandra Walter has been turning up her training regimen while competing in Canadian series races. On Saturday, Walter finished second in the Canada Cup and BC Cup XCO mountain biking race at Blackcomb near Whistler, BC, Canada.

The women’s elite class was stacked with Canada’s top-ranked riders and one US athlete. At the sound of the start gun, Walter took the holeshot and commanded the first half lap of racing. After two miles of racing, Catherine Pendrel made her move and maintained the lead for the remaining four laps. Walter continued to battle with American rider Savilia Blunk until she was able to distance herself on one of the course’s many climbs to finish comfortably in second. In just over an hour and a half of racing, the top elite women had raced 15 miles with 3575ft of climbing.

“With the tough competition, I was happy to take home second place,” said Walter. “It was a hard battle and I'm really happy with how I was able to keep the pressure on and minimize the gap from the lead, while also extending my advantage over my chasers.”

While at home in British Columbia between World Cups, Walter also competed in the Sp'akw'us bike race, a two-day XC challenge in Squamish on June 15-16. She took home first place on day 1 (50km), day 2 (35km) and the two-day stage race.

“These races were part of my mid-season training block between World Cups. I was stoked to be surrounded by some of my favourite people and training buddies and being immersed in the grassroots racing scene is so fun and energizing. It reminds me of why I love racing so much,” said Walter.

On the road again, Walter heads to Europe next week for the next two World Cup XCO races in Andorra and France.
