Rivera Second at Tour de Yorkshire!
Met with a fast-paced race and many challenges at Saturday’s Tour de Yorkshire, Team Sunweb women worked to position Coryn Rivera for a sprint finish. Rivera did not let the team down, sprinting to second place behind a solo leader.
The 122.5 km course is punctuated by one main climb, the Côte de Lofthouse, which spans 1.7 km with an average grade of 10.9 percent. Both Rozanne Slik and Juliette Labous had positioned themselves in the lead group of 10 at the start of the hill, by the top Labous and seven other riders remained. Behind, Slik had fallen back and, together with Ellen Van Dijk, assisted Rivera in the chase.
With 14 km left in the race, Elizabeth Deignan (Boels-Dolmans) made a break off the front and the other lead riders were absorbed into the chase group. Deignan managed to hold off the strong pack behind her all the way through the finish. Less than a minute later, Rivera blasted ahead of eight other riders on her Envie Advanced Pro team bike to finish strong in second.
“I think we did everything we could today, but in the end, Lizzie [Deignan] was too strong. We came into the race with a plan to race for a sprint with Coryn and this nearly worked out,” said Team Sunweb coach Hans Timmermans.
“Second is still a good result and I’m happy with how we raced.”
The Team Sunweb women, including Rivera, will race next in California, USA for the Women’s Tour of California May 11-14.
