Team Sunweb lined up for the last UCI Women’s WorldTour race of the season Sunday which took place in the city of Madrid. Led out by her teammates, Coryn Rivera charged to a second place finish. The podium would be her 10th individual podium of the year.
The women’s race on Sunday preceded the final stage of the men’s Vuelta a España. Racers would complete 15 laps of the 5.8 km circuit with the added intermediate sprint points on 12 of the laps to make an exciting race.
Though Team Sunweb had a strong hold on the peloton through the majority of the race, on the final lap four riders got away. Working with the other teams, the ladies were able to successfully chase and bring the break back to the group just in time for the final sprint. With a lead out that started according to plan, Rivera was flanked by other team’s riders and was forced to start her sprint too early. She was narrowly beaten to the line but finished the season strong with another podium for the Team.
“Everyone put in 110% effort and we can be happy with that,” said Rivera. “We owned the lead-out and it was super cool that pretty much everything went to plan. Of course I am a little disappointed to not pull off the win after all the team’s amazing work today, but it was a close finish. I am a different kind of sad since it is our last road race of the year together but that also gets me even more excited for 2018.”
The women head to Bergen, Norway this weekend to begin a week of racing at World Championships. Beginning with the Team Time Trial on Sunday, September 17th, Team Sunweb has one more chance at glory for the 2017 road season.
