Rae Morrison led a strong showing by the Liv Racing crew at the 2019 Sea Otter Classic over the weekend, scoring podium finishes in both the enduro and downhill events at the massive annual mountain bike festival in Monterey, California.
The Liv squad was everywhere throughout four days of competition at Raceway Laguna Seca, competing in XC, enduro, downhill, dual slalom, and all road racing events.
“All weekend long I was in a really good headspace having fun riding with my Liv Racing teammates,” said Morrison, who rode those positive vibes to second place in the elite women’s enduro and third in the downhill. “This relaxed and positive mentality translated to my races and I think it really helped.”
Morrison kicked things off by racing her new Liv Intrigue Advanced team bike in the four-stage enduro race, which included runs on the DH track and dual slalom course along with two stages on wooded trails outside the race venue.
“I’m really happy with how I rode,” Morrison said. “It was a windy day and a physical course, but everything went well for me.”
With a total time of 11:38, Morrison finished 14 seconds behind overall winner Anneke Beerten to lock down second place. Her Liv Racing teammates Crystal Anthony, Leonie Picton, and Isabella Naughton finished 16th, 17th and 19th respectively. Competing in three disciplines at Sea Otter, Naughton is the youngest member of the Liv Racing Squad. The races were her first ever in the pro category.
“I feel I learned so much from it and can use that to get faster,” said Naughton. “I know what I need to work on now and will go from there and take that into my next race!”
Two days later, Morrison traded her Intrigue for the Liv Hail Advanced for the women’s downhill event. She was again at the front of the action, this time finishing third, just ahead of her teammate Caroline Washam, who joined Morrison on the podium in fourth place racing aboard her Intrigue Advanced. Washam also competed in the dual slalom event the day before on her Liv Pique SX, qualifying 4th but was unable to make it out of the round of eight after washing out in a tight, loose corner.
Leading Liv on the on-road side, Ayesha McGowan flew to a podium finish in the women’s elite crit race Thursday and followed that finish with 9th in the road race Friday and 6th in the circuit race Sunday.
The Liv Racing team was also represented well in XC racing, with Sandra Walter scoring the top result, a 10th place in the first of two UCI XC races. The Canadian is off to a strong start ahead of her 2019 World Cup season.
