Riding her first Superprestige cyclocross race of the season, Lucinda Brand of Team Sunweb proved she is still at home on grass, mud, and sand. After spending time leading the race in Ruddervoorde, Belgium, Brand found herself in a three-way sprint for the finish where she passed World Champion Sanne Cant at the line for an impressive second place.
Sunday’s course benefited Brand’s technical ability, winding racers through 40 corners, across deep sand and muddy conditions. The tight track made for tight racing, which kept Brand, Cant, Annemarie Worst and eventual winner Maud Kaptheijns battling at the front for the majority of the race with no rider able to stretch out a sizeable lead. Brand’s strength, technique, and perseverance led to her optimal positioning that placed her just one second off the win.
“Super happy to make the podium already,” said Brand in an Instagram post on Sunday. “A difficult course with all kind of technique and an exciting battle from start to finish.”
After a sixth at the Koksijde World Cup a week prior, Brand is sure to make more cyclocross appearances in the coming months.
