Lucinda Brand a Strong Second at Final UCI CX World Cup!
Leading up to the World Cyclocross Championships January 28-29 in Luxembourg, Team Sunweb rider Lucinda Brand has positioned herself as a capable contender. After silver medals at Dutch National CX Championships, European CX Championships and a slew of other podium appearances, Brand scored a respectable second place finish at the final UCI Cyclocross event of the year, the Hoogerheide World Cup.
Racing against the sport’s top riders in icy and sandy conditions, Brand was one of the few competitors to stay upright. Surviving several crashes during the beginning of the race were five leaders in addition to Brand: Sanne Cant (IKO Enertherm-Beobank), Sophie de Boer (Kalas-Nnof), Laura Verdonschot (Marlux-Napoleon Games), Annemarie Worst (Mijn Bad Liv-Giant), and Marianne Vos (WM3).
One and a half laps from the finish, Vos attacked the group on a particularly challenging portion of the track and quickly opened a gap on Brand from which she was unable to recover. However, she was able to ride away from the rest of the chasers during the final lap of the race to secure a strong second.
Another Liv rider, locally sponsored Worst, pushed hard to overtake Cant just before the finish line to round out a completely Dutch podium.
