Lesley Paterson Wins Xterra Beaver Creek!
In her second Xterra of the season, Lesley Paterson felt right at home in the mountains of Avon, Colorado over the weekend. Neither the challenging mountain bike course nor altitude would bring her down, as she raced to victory and finished nearly 10 minutes ahead of the second place finisher on Saturday, July 15.
Xterra Beaver Creek challenged athletes with a 1-mile (1.6km) swim in the 67-degree waters of Nottingham Lake, 25km mountain bike course through the Rocky Mountain terrain, and a brutal 9.3km trail run. Paterson exited the water in third, 25 seconds behind the leader Julie Baker and barely trailing competitor Suzie Snyder, who won ahead of Paterson at Xterra Oak Mountain. But, after passing Snyder in transition and Baker less than 1km into the mountain bike course, Paterson didn’t look back. She piloted the Liv Obsess Advanced to a five minute lead over Snyder.
"Beaver Creek Xterra is an amazing race that encapsulates the true spirit of the sport,” said Paterson. “It’s at high altitude, and is filled with tons of brutal climbing and many challenges along the way. Yesterday was an amazing day for me from start to finish.”
Knowing she had a substantial lead over the rest of the pack heading into the trail run, Paterson didn’t stop there. She pushed her body and mind to the limit to achieve the best possible time she could – finishing with a winning time of 2:26:07.
Paterson followed up her triathlon win on Saturday with another victory on Sunday in the 20km Xterra Trail Run. She took the 2,400 feet of climbing in stride, calling the add-on event, “a wee workout.”
In addition to racing professionally and coaching athletes with her business Braveheart Coaching, Paterson and husband Dr. Simon Marshall have also just released their book, The Brave Athlete. You can catch Paterson touring around the United States this summer promoting her book and read some of her tips in Liv’s Triathlon Guides.
