De Jong Comes in Second at Koppenbergcross!
Coming off Sunday’s win at European Cyclocross Championships, Rabo Liv team rider Thalita de Jong found herself in a battle for first place on Tuesday’s Koppenbergcross cyclocross race in Belgium. De Jong narrowly lost the duel for the win, crossing the finish line in second, just 11 seconds behind the day’s winner.
Together, de Jong and Jolien Verschueren, lead the majority of the race by a substantial margin to the rest of the field that would eventually be led by Sophie de Boer. The crowd enjoyed an exciting duel between de Jong and Verschueren as they traded position multiple times on each trip up the famous cobbled Koppenberg hill. In the end, de Jong was defeated within meters of the finish with nothing left in the tank to counter Verschueren’s attack.
“It was great fun thanks to the crowd,” de Jong told Sporza during a post-race video interview. “They spur you on. I knew Jolien is very strong uphill. I was glad that I was able to respond to many of her accelerations and only let her go on that final bit. It was a good race.”
Even with her second place finish, de Jong is still in control of the DVV Verzekeringen Trofee overall standings by 45 seconds after the first two races of the series.
De Jong expressed in an Instagram post after the race on Tuesday that she is looking forward to a little rest before the third round of the DVV Trophy on November 27 in Hamme, Belgium.
