Stage 2 of the tour would be a bit tougher than the first stage, with 440m of climbing on each of the four 34km laps. As with the first stage, Team Sunweb set out to make it a tough race. Off the start, Liane Lippert and Floortje Mackaij leapt into a breakaway of 11 riders and gathered some valuable points in both the sprint and KOM classifications. As the race closed in the final lap, the break was caught and the lead out began for the bunch sprint. Rivera fought to the line for the win aboard her Liv Langma Advanced SL, but ultimately missed out on a second victory.
“Another dominant performance by the girls today,” said Rivera. “Ellen and I had really good communication in the last kilometers and she and Lucinda were able to deliver me in good position. A rider snuck by me and I just ran out of space to catch her. It was a close sprint but we can still be really happy with our efforts from today.”
The second place means Rivera will hold onto the yellow leader’s jersey for another day. Ellen van Dijk currently wears the points jersey.
