After a stellar year in her main discipline, cross-country mountain bike racing, Sandra Walter isn’t sitting still on her off-season. This weekend she stood on her second Canadian National Championship podium of 2019, this time earning the bronze medal in cyclocross.

Liv Racing athlete Sandra Walter, freshly back from an Olympic mountain bike test event in Tokyo last month, earned two cyclocross podium finishes over the weekend. Saturday’s bronze medal performance at the Canadian Cyclocross Championships in Peterborough, Ontario made it the fifth year in a row she has finished in the top-3 at the event.

Conditions were cold and rainy. Minutes before the race began, a downpour with temperatures only slightly above freezing made the mud on course the consistency of peanut butter. Even after sliding on the ground several times, Walter kept her pace and finished just over three minutes back of the second-place finisher aboard her Brava SLR.

“Saturday was just so loud out there with all the cheering,” said Walter. “it felt really special to hear my name and get all of that encouragement, so riding through the finish at the end and high-fiving all of the people course-side was a lot of fun.”

Walter followed up National Championships with the PTBO CX race the following day. Though the race took place on the same course, the conditions were completely different. With drier conditions, Walter kept the race tight and finished with another strong third place.
