Lesley Paterson followed up her 2018 XTERRA World Championship win with a silver medal in Maui on Sunday against an extremely competitive field of pro women.

XTERRA World Championships draws the world’s best off-road triathletes to Maui, Hawaii’s second-largest island, each year and 2019 was no different. In the deep women’s pro field, Liv Racing’s Lesley Paterson was one of a handful of favorites who could take home gold.

Heading into race day, a week of dry weather ended with a heavy morning shower, making the technical bike and run courses even more challenging. The weather didn’t stick around for long, by the time the pros emerged from the rough surf onto D.T. Fleming Beach the sky was blue, and the sun was shining. Paterson had a strong swim and exited the water within the bunch, 3.5 minutes back on the race leader. Onto the bike course aboard her Liv Obsess Advanced, Paterson began making passes and moved into second just two miles into the climb. She held her second-place position over the remaining 18 miles on the bike and through the entire 6.5-mile trail run but was unable to catch race winner Flora Duffy (Bermuda).

“I’m definitely happy with second place,” said Paterson. “Flora Duffy was in a league of her own, so I had to focus on my own race, and I fought the whole way which was extremely positive.”

After yesterday’s race, Paterson has now finished either first or second at eight XTERRA World Championships since 2009.
