Team BikeExchange-Jayco made a strong showing in two back-to-back Spanish one-day races on May 10 and 11. After teammates Kristen Faulkner and Ane Santesteban finished fourth and fifth at the hilly Emakumeen Nafarroako, the duo stepped up their performance on Wednesday by finishing third and second, respectively. The team also secured the victory in the team’s classification for both races.

The Navarra Women’s Elite Classics in Pamplona, Spain consisted of 127km of challenging and hilly terrain in hot conditions. Racers toed the start line with 137km and eight categorized ascents already in their legs from Emakumeen Nafarroako the day before. Another eight climbs lay ahead of the peloton on Wednesday with the final ascent 10km from the finish. After a solo rider went clear from the group with 47km to go, Team BikeExchange-Jayco riders Faulkner and Santesteban along with Veronica Ewers formed a chase group and caught the breakaway rider 10km later. The quartet held a gap of 20 seconds to one minute ahead of a reduced chasing bunch until Ewers attacked on the final climb. Faulkner and Santesteban work together in an attempt to reel in the solo leader, but were unsuccessful. Santesteban finished second with Faulkner crossing the finish in third, both aboard the Langma Aadvanced SL Disc.

“Me and Kristen rode together and worked together well but it wasn’t enough in the end so of course we are a little bit disappointed,” said Santesteban. “We want to win, but with the way we are racing like this, the win will arrive soon.”

With Team BikeExchange-Jayco’s strong finishes in the last three Spanish one-day races, the squad is confident heading into the coming Spanish races.
