After opening Giro Rosa with a team time trial podium, Marianne Vos has followed with a commanding sprint victory on stage two. Even with a seven percent uphill gradient to the finish, Vos managed to have enough power reserved to cross the line with a clear gap on her closest rivals.
The 78km stage began with a fierce first climb, the category two Colle del Lis. The only breakaway attempt on the 15.7km climb was caught before the descent and the bunch remained together for over a third of the race. With 45km left to go, two riders went clear and extended a three-minute lead over the next 15km. But as the kilometers clicked on and the final climb into Viu commenced, the duo’s lead began to dwindle. With just 6km to go, they were caught. With the finish approaching, several riders attempted to ignite the sprint, but it was Vos’ perfect timing and powerful execution that sealed the deal for CCC-Liv.
The win marked Vos’ 22nd stage victory at Giro Rosa and moved her up into fifth in this year’s general classification race, just 35 seconds back of the lead. Another 10 seconds back, Ashleigh Moolman Pasio is still in great position for the GC.
Vos raced Saturday's stage aboard her Langma Advanced SL equipped with CADEX WheelSystems, giving the new brand their first win after launching Friday. CCC-Liv riders now look forward to a longer, flatter stage three tomorrow at 104km and 1492m of climbing.
