The Team Sunweb women began the Tour of Norway with a bang on Thursday, winning the Team Time Trial race by 38 seconds.
The team, consisting of Lucinda Brand, Leah Kirchmann, Liane Lippert, Floortje Mackaij, Coryn Rivera and Ruth Winder worked together seamlessly to use each rider’s strengths over the difficult 24.3km course. After finishing second at the Vargarda time trial the week before in Sweden and looking ahead to defending their World Championship stripes next month, Team Sunweb was determined to put in a good time. The rolling hills and final 2km climb to the finish suited the team’s strengths and strategy and the strong headwinds and crosswinds added to the challenge.
“It was an incredible team performance today,” said coach Hans Timmermans. “After doing the recon twice we saw that it was a difficult TTT which probably made the difference for us. I’m incredibly proud of how we executed it, using the strengths in the downhills and the uphills – that was the key to our success today.”
Unusual prizes for the WorldTour races are always a source of amusement for the riders, but the TTT prize had the team particularly enthusiastic: 25kg of Norwegian salmon was awarded to the TTT winners.
