CCC-Liv Team rider Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio grabbed the lead in both the mountain and sprint classifications during Stage 1 of the Boels Ladies Tour, a six-day stage race through the Netherlands that’s one of the final Women’s WorldTour events of the season.

Moolman-Pasio was aggressive on Wednesday’s 123km race from Stramproy to Weert. The mostly flat stage finished with three laps of an 8.4km circuit in Weert. Moolman-Pasio, riding her Liv Langma Advanced SL team bike, attacked with 29km to go as the peloton rolled into Weert. She worked up a gap of 40 seconds on the field, collecting mountain and sprint points along the way.

“There were many open parts today where the peloton could fall apart, as well as some wooded areas giving riders the possibility to reconnect,” explained CCC-Liv sports director Jeroen Blijlevens. “Ashleigh wanted to show today that she is in good shape and therefore chose the attack. Unfortunately, she did not receive immediate support in her escape or the chance of a successful outcome would have been greater.”

The South African national champion was eventually caught with about 10km to go, but she had done enough to earn the lead in the mountain and sprint competitions.

The Boels Ladies Tour continues Thursday with Stage 2 and will conclude Sunday in Arnhem.
