The race came the day after Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first race of the road season for the Team Sunweb women. Van Dijk, who gave her all on Saturday to get teammate Coryn Rivera in position to take fifth during the bunch sprint, still had plenty left in the tank for the 133-kilometer Hageland course.
Commanding the race at the front, new Sunweb riders Ruth Winder and Pernille Mathiesen countered attacks and pushed the pace before Lianne Lippert and van Dijk were able to break away with eight kilometers to go. Lippert rode to the point of exhaustion to set van Dijk up perfectly for the win – as she dropped back, van Dijk was able to continue the attack solo all the way to the finish, crossing the line with a 12-second lead.
“The team was really incredible today, everyone did their job perfectly,” said van Dijk. “We were constantly attacking all race and it was my job to just stay calm. The girls did a super strong lead-out onto the last climb and nobody could follow us… I’m really happy to finish off the team’s hard work today with the win.”
The UCI Women’s WorldTour begins Saturday, March 3 with Strade Bianche, Italy.
