A Trail to Zero is our journey to transform cycling into an environmental force for good.

We know the goal of becoming “net zero,” a state in which greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere are counterbalanced by carbon removal, is a challenging one. To push ourselves and the entire bike industry forward, we have created an ambitious plan with clear steps to follow.

It starts with developing more eco-friendly bikes, components and gear using recycled materials and sustainable manufacturing principles. But it goes well beyond just the products we create. We’re also aiming to make our operations more eco-friendly, being mindful about energy use, resources and processes—so that we walk the talk and become models for this movement.

This is not a casual ride. It’s a daily grind of eco innovation. But we have already begun, and we’ll keep moving forward until we get there.

Bold target to reduce the amount of CO2e

Giant’s parent company Giant Group has set a bold target to reduce the amount of CO2e produced per bicycle by 40kg by 2030. This measurable commitment represents a major step on the A Trail to Zero journey to transform cycling into an environmental solution. Beyond that, we are also aiming to transition to 15% green power in our operations by 2030 and to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 25%.

Upcycled Ocean Waste

SEAWASTEX FCFC NYLON

Seawastex FCFC nylon is a material that’s specifically designed to handle marine plastic waste. It transforms discarded ocean plastics through recycling and reprocessing into new, usable materials. Seawastex FCFC nylon retains the strength characteristics of the original plastic and offers excellent chemical resistance and weatherability, ensuring durability in harsh environments.

Recycled nylon is commonly sourced from discarded fishing nets, which have a strong impact on marine pollution. Collaborating with local recyclers to reuse these nets helps address the longstanding problem of their disposal and supports sustainable practices in the fishing industry.

Recycled Daily Plastics

A thermoplastic polymer with good heat resistance and strength, PP can be recycled and used many times. We source discarded PP from everyday products and industrial applications to turn it into saddles made with recycled plastic. This reduces CO2 emissions by 29.7g per saddle.

Recycling EPS, a lightweight and strong foam-like plastic with excellent insulation, involves collecting, processing, and releasing discarded materials often used in the automotive industry. Added to our Enviro helmets, rEPS helps us lower carbon emissions and reduce the amount of waste entering landfills.

TPR is a thermoplastic material with excellent wear resistance, elasticity, and chemical resistance. Discarded TPR can be made into new TPR products. We use recycled TPR in our PRE rCarbon push bike for its excellent elasticity and durability.

EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a soft and flexible plastic that is not biodegradable. So recycling EVA can significantly reduce the amount of waste entering landfills. Through washing, crushing and reheating, we recycle EVA for future usage in products like our PRE rCARBON push bike.

Recycled Industrial Materials

Recycled Aluminum

During our carbon footprint inventory, we found that aluminum alloys have a high carbon emission. Therefore, researching ways to use recycled aluminum was crucial for us to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emission.

Carbon fiber is known for its high strength and light weight. However, virgin carbon fiber production is energy-intensive, and approximately 30% of produced carbon fibers become waste. By recycling these fibers, we can support material sustainability.

Glass fiber is used in the bicycle industry due to its strength and lightweight properties. We use recycled glass fiber in saddle bases, which saves approximately 10,000 sheets annually. Each sheet reduces carbon emissions by 48g of CO2.

Iron is infinitely recyclable. For this reason we use recycled iron for the steel portion of our saddle rails, reducing CO2 emissions by 73.5g per saddle.

Renewable Biomass Sources

Renewable Castor Oil

Produced from castor oil, Rilsan® PA11 resin is a high-performance polymer of 100% renewable origin. Compared to traditional nylon, it offers better flexibility, lower water absorption, and enhanced impact resistance. It strengthens our AGOS Eyewear with low-carbon durability, contributing to sustainability while maintaining superior performance.

Plastics made from renewable materials such as plants, crops and microorganisms. They are biodegradable, which helps minimize long-term waste and supports a circular economy. Bioplastics are valued for their durability, lightweight nature, and strength. Our Enviro bar tape uses bioplastics made from rice, bamboo, and other agricultural waste. These materials also possess good elasticity and heat resistance.
